Frequently Asked Questions

Is LASIK for everyone?

To be eligible for LASIK the eye must be in good health and vision must be stable. However, some people are better candidates than others and some may be better suited to another refractive surgery technique or a combination of techniques. Consultation with the doctor prior to surgery is important to determine estimated benefits and possible complications.

Describe the LASIK technique

LASIK uses a protective instrument, a microkeratome, to create and lift a thin flap of the cornea. When the flap is lifted, the surgeon uses a laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. The flap is placed back over the cornea and heals quickly without stitches.

What is required to prepare for laser vision correction?

A comprehensive eye exam is necessary to confirm your prescription and the health of your eyes. If you wear contacts, you must remove them prior to your evaluation; for soft contact lenses two weeks; for hard or gas permeable contacts, three to four weeks.

How long does the procedure take and is there any discomfort?

The procedure takes about 10 minutes to complete and both eyes can corrected on the same day. While the procedure is painless, mild discomfort, if any, may occur in the first hours after surgery. Some people experience some tearing with a scratchy feeling. This generally resolves within a few days.

How fast will my vision recover?

After LASIK, most patients notice dramatic improvement in their vision within the first 24-48 hours. People with more severe amounts of nearsightedness or patients who are farsighted may find their visual recovery is a little slower. Each individual's wound healing response will also affect how quickly the best vision is achieved.

What is the success rate with laser vision correction?

While we cannot guarantee vision results, laser vision correction usually provides 20/40 vision or better, which is necessary to pass a driver's exam. However, an overwhelming majority of patients achieve 20/20.

What is required for post-operative care?

Following your laser vision correction, you will need to go home and rest. Sleep is very helpful to the eyes and ensures quicker healing. You will use antibiotic eye drops for one week following surgery.

When can I expect to return to my normal daily activities?

Although there will be minimal restrictions for swimming or sports for about one week, most patients return to daily activities, including work, within a day or two.
