Dr. Thomassen completed his undergraduate degree as a distinguished cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point and received his medical degree with honors from Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC,in 1981, having served as chief resident. He became certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1982, scoring in the top two percent of all candidates. Dr. Thomassen completed his corneal fellowship at Philadelphia's Wills Eye Hospital, one of the first investigative sites for refractive surgery in the United States. Prior to that, he had been appointed director of cataract, cornea and glaucoma surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and held that position for eleven years till joining the Mercy Regional Eye Center in 1993 as its first ophthalmology subspecialist. Dr. Thomassen is the only corneal specialist between Madison and Rockford.

Dr. Thomassen serves on the visiting faculty of the department of ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin and as an assistant professor for the department of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Thomassen is an experienced eye surgeon who has performed refractive surgery at the Mercy Regional Eye Center since 1993 and has hundreds of satisfied patients. He stays current with technological advances, using the latest, state-of-the-art equipment to bring the highest quality eye care to his patients. Dr. Thomassen performs a wide range of eye surgeries and provides excellent eye care for the families in this community.
